Simple Gluten Free Challah Recipe
Challah is potentially the best bread in the WORLD. Yeah, I just made that claim. It’s so good when done right. I’ve only ever had “traditional” challah & what I mean by that isn’t “plain” challah — rosemary, cinnamon sugar, raisin, EBTB, I’ve had alllll the seasonings. But what I’ve never had homemade was non-traditional, gluten free challah. Why you ask?! No one makes it, no one even talks about it! So I surveyed quite a few traditional challah recipes & made up my own hoping for the best. Disclaimer: the GF challah doesn’t taste just like traditional challah, but it is still really good. This isn’t an exact copy, it’s an alternative so those who need (or want) to avoid gluten can still enjoy this holy bread!
Ingredients (this makes 3 medium size challah):
2 cups almond flour
3 cups tapioca flour
1 TBSP xanthum gum
1/2 cup warm water
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 TBSP gf yeast (I use Red Star)
1 egg
3 TBSP oil (I use avocado or sunflower)
Steps:
Mix flour + brown sugar + water + salt + yeast + eggs
Mix until relatively smooth
Add oil
Mix until smooth
Shape + braid as you would
Completely cover in an egg wash
Season as you wish (my favorite is rosemary + garlic)
Bake at 325 for 30 minutes
