Best Sushi Burger in the 215
Do you love sushi? Do you love maki rolls? Hand rolls? Sashimi? Any way it's served, you're loving it? Then you MUST try Bubblefish's SUSHI BURGER! Yep, you read that right. A sushi BURGER. Crazy, I know.
Located in Philadelphia's Chinatown (909 Arch), Bubblefish is one of a kind. They specialize in bubble tea (hence the name) and delicious, fresh sushi. Their most special item on the menu is their famous sushi burger. Oh and they're BYOB. You're welcome ;)
I was invited to do a taste-test of their most popular items and I'm excited to share the review with you!
1. Bubblefish Specials - Very Mango $5.25
This drink is SO GOOD! It tastes like a refreshing mango smoothie with yogurt pops that make squishing them in your mouth fun! It's also as big as it seems in the picture so the money spent is very worthwhile. If you like things sweet then order it as it comes, but you can opt for "less" sweet at 70% sugar or "half" sweet at 50% which is what I tend to do.
2. Appetizers - Miso Soup $2.95
I am a miso soup addict. This probably came about from my boyfriend who always claims he could have miso soup for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! I'm the same way now - I can never get enough! So it's safe to say I've had my fair share of tasting miso's and Bubblefish's is one of the absolute best. My favorite part is the size! It's large aka filling! I hate when you pay $5 for a miso soup and it's served in the smallest bowl, ever. Theirs also has immense flavor because it's packed with tofu, seaweed, and scallions. Do yourself a favor and taste it!
3. Appetizers - Edamame $3.50
This is as basic as it gets (other than a spicy tuna roll). Bubblefish serves both salted edamame and spicy garlic edamame -- equally as delicious. The spicy ones have quite a kick though!
4. Signature Rolls - Marilyn Monroll $12.95
Best.Specialty.Roll.Ever. Imagine every yummy flavor in your mouth at once. Yeah, that's this roll. Comprised of spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and avocado, it is then topped with torched white tuna, tobiko, and scallions. You get the underlying spice from the tuna and salmon inside the roll, plus the soft and tasty avo. The torched tuna provides a smoky flavor with a unique texture and the added tobiko and scallions add the perfect little crunch. They serve this roll with a side of garlic yuzu sauce. And this sauce is the shi*t.
5. Sushi A La Cart - Yellowtail + Salmon $4.50
Sushi should never be chewy or smelly (gag me) and luckily, Bubblefish's never is! The sushi and sashimi a la cart options are all priced very fairly and are served two pieces per order. The fish is tender + tasty, and the rice is nicely warmed. Perfection!
6. Weekly Specials - SUSHI BURGER $12.95
Mouth wide open and pinky's up!!! I wish you guys could reach through the screen and pull out this burger. Mmmm mmmm! The sushi burger is delicious, filling, beautiful, and definitely Instaworthy. It's packed with pepper tuna, spicy tuna, spicy crab (but I get it without because #kosher), lettuce, avocado, fried onions, spicy sauce, and a delicious and tangy ponzu-type sauce. The tuna itself is so delectable, but honestly the secret "sauce" to this masterpiece is the fried onions. They add so much flavor and a great texture to the meal. Not to mention, for the cost, this is a BARGAIN!
Safe to say the meal was delicious by the look of this photo.....
Bubblefish is open every single day of the week! Which by the way, when sushi restaurants aren't open everyday this is a red flag!! That means that when they do open the day after they had off, the fish is now from two days ago (frozen or refrigerated for that time). Yuck! Bubblefish opens at 11am daily and closes at midnight (1am on Saturday & Sunday's).
Bubblefish has over 200 items on the menu so even if you're not a huge fan of raw fish (who are you???) you'll still find something great to choose from: fried rice, chicken teriyaki, Taiwanese beef noodle soup, crispy wings, and more.
